My Belief: Saved By Faith Alone

The only way to Heaven is by being perfect – consider God’s holiness – but the Bible clearly says we are not. Here is one verse from the many: Romans 3:10 “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:”

So how can we get to Heaven if not by works? Our only hope is that someone would pay this debt that we owe to God, that someone would bridge the gap and become our mediator, that a perfect man would share his perfection with us imperfect men.

This exact substitution has been promised since the dawn of time: Genesis 3:14-15 [14] “And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this … [15]And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” Christ would come and destroy Satan, Death, and Sin. However there was always a price to pay: 1 Peter 1:19 “But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:”

And He came, and He died, and He paid the price for the sins of all those who would believe upon Him: John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

Paul, in his epistle to the Hebrews, says: “Now the just shall live by faith…” And so we do. We live in faith, because that is how we hold on to the atoning nature of Christ’s death. We live spiritually by faith, because that is how we are accepted into Heaven. And we live for faith, because that is the centre of life – there is nothing else worth living for: Philippians 1:21 “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

I hope this brief piece was helpful. I will be returning next week with a topic close to this one: ‘The Usefulness of Works’ because if we are saved by faith then what is the point of doing good works?

Thank you for reading, I hope it is a blessing to you,

Andrew
